Balancing Your Facial Features

If you have a receding chin on profile view or a weak jawline (short or narrow chin) on frontal view, you may be a candidate for chin augmentation. A weak chin is typically the result of genetic factors. A receding chin may give the illusion of a big nose or a poorly defined neck angle on profile view. Some patients don’t notice their receding chin until they start to age in the upper neck area.

A volume-deficient chin can predispose you to premature aging once you enter your 30’s and 40’s, making jowls appear more prominent and a lower face seem continuous with the neck (sometimes referred to as a “turkey neck”). A chin implant can strengthen the jaw line, lessen the appearance of sagging jowls and improve definition of the neck line, resulting in a more youthful facial contour. Extended chin implants are often used for a more natural looking result to allow a smooth transition between the chin and lateral jawline. Extended cheek implants can also delay the unsightly appearance of jowls that develop with age.

Cheek implants are often requested by patients who have volume loss in their cheeks. This deficiency can be genetic or occur with age. Cheek implants are placed in targeted areas to lift, fill and contour the cheeks for a more youthful appearance to the mid-face as well as a rested appearance to the eyes.

Facial Implant Surgery

Dr. Mandal has performed facial implant surgery in an outpatient setting while the patient is under “twilight sleep” or general anesthesia. Chin implants are inserted through a small well-hidden submental incision and positioned directly over the anterior jaw bone. Cheek implants are commonly inserted thru a hidden incision within the gum line of the upper mouth with no external incisions. Over time, your body’s own tissues grow around the implant to envelope it and anchor it into place. There are no postoperative dressings, but patients are placed on 10 days of oral antibiotics to reduce infection risk. Most swelling and bruising, if any, typically resolves in 7 to 10 days.

The Bellafill® Alternative

In many patients, Dr. Mandal may recommend a long-term injectable such as Bellafill® – the 5 year filler to restore or supplement volume in the chin, jawline, cheek and mid-face instead of a cheek or chin implant. Temporary fillers such as Restylane®, Sculptra® and Juvéderm® Voluma are also available but require frequent maintenance at 6 to 12 month intervals.

Facial implants come in fixed shapes and sizes and while they can be slightly modified prior to surgical insertion, further refinement can be achieved with facial fillers for any deficient areas that remain once fully healed from surgical implant placement.

Other patients, who had a facial implant placed 15-20 years earlier, will continue to age and experience volume loss around the implant over time. Dr. Mandal can treat the newly developed volume-deficient areas with facial fillers. However. Dr. Mandal takes great care in her injection technique.
