A Surgeon's Skill, An Artist's Soul, A Woman's Compassion

Skin Cancer Palm Beach Gardens

As a Facial Plastic Surgeon specializing in the face and neck, Dr. Mandal has considerable experience in performing skin cancer excision and repair. The surgical treatment of skin cancers on the face requires greater technical skill and anatomic knowledge, even more so in areas with less skin laxity near the eyes, nose, lips and ears. Regardless of treatment, she is a strong advocate of preventative care and proper sun protection including use of an effective sunscreen at all times.

Dr. Mandal surgically treats both squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas as well as melanoma. To raise awareness of how melanoma can be the most dangerous of skin cancers, she chaired the Annual Melanoma Foundation Luncheon at the Four Seasons Resort in Palm Beach.

Types of Skin Cancer

When a skin cancer is removed and leaves a large defect, special surgical flaps often need to be created in order to close the defect without significant deformity. Areas of treatment include the face, eyelids, nose, lips, ears, cheeks, forehead, chin, neck, scalp and body. Surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia in one of Dr. Mandal’s office surgical suites.

Why Seek A Facial Plastic Surgeon Over A Dermatologist?

While many skin cancers are detected by dermatologists who perform routine skin cancer screenings, there are significant advantages to having a facial plastic surgeon perform closure of the defect. Many dermatologists perform Moh’s surgery which, in theory, enables removal of the skin cancer while leaving the smallest tissue defect possible. Conserving healthy skin around the skin cancer with Moh’s surgery is mainly necessary in delicate areas with more tightly adherent skin such as the lips, nose, ears and eyelids. Other areas like the forehead, cheeks, neck and body have greater tissue laxity and elasticity and can usually be repaired without the extra step of Moh’s excision.

Dr. Mandal typically recommends that her patients seek Moh’s excision for skin cancers near the mouth, eyes, nose and ears but reserve a complex surgical closure for a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon experienced with the various skin flaps often needed to minimize scar visibility and tissue distortion. When it comes to most other areas of the face and body, Dr. Mandal typically removes the cancer in one of her office surgical suites and, at the same time, can perform surgical closure in a single step.

Even in cases where Moh’s excision is performed, the surgeon often needs to remove additional skin surrounding the Moh’s defect to achieve a proper closure that minimizes scar as well as deformity.

Dr. Mandal does not participate in any health insurance plans. She also does not perform routine skin cancer screenings for which you should consult your dermatologist.
